If you have blonde or highlighted hair, silver or grey hair, bleached or balayage hair, then you have most likely heard about purple shampoo and why it’s a necessity!
Being blonde and finding the perfect shade often takes time, money, and commitment. That’s why keeping your colour as fresh and vibrant as when you left the salon is so important. This is where a blonde toning shampoo may be recommended.
Your stylist will provide you with a toning service at the salon, but it’s your responsibility to maintain your hair colour at home, especially during the warmer months when we tend to do more outside activities. The sun, chlorine, salt water, heat styling, and frequency of washing your hair are all factors that work against keeping your blonde locks healthy, fresh, and shiny. To prevent your blonde locks from going brassy, we highly recommend a professional blonde shampoo.
Purple shampoo is a pigmented shampoo mainly for blonde and highlighted hair, but it can also be used on grey and brunettes to neutralise and remove unwanted brassy, yellow, and orange undertones between salon colour services. Violet pigment shampoos are ideal for platinum, light blonde hair, while blue pigment shampoos are recommended more for darker natural blondes and brunettes that tend to fade out on the warmer side between colours.
In hairdressing terms, the easiest way to explain how a purple shampoo works is to think of a colour wheel: purple falls directly opposite to yellow. This means it will counteract and neutralise yellow tones.
I personally also recommend the use of purple shampoos for violet and purple colours to help prolong and stop colour fading. The violet pigments will help to deposit purple hues and refresh and help maintain your cooler tones between colours.
You’re probably wondering, "How often should I use purple shampoo?" To obtain optimal results, we recommend using your toning shampoo at least twice a week. This, however, will depend on how often you wash your hair. Keep in mind that toning shampoos should not replace your regular shampoo and conditioner. Purple shampoos may differ a bit from product to product, making it essential to read and follow all instructions on the back label of your chosen shampoo. A big tip is to pay attention to how long the recommended timing is to leave the shampoo on your hair. Product formulas vary, and the correct timing will determine the outcome for the product to work correctly.
Another thing to be aware of is the texture and condition of your blonde locks. Those with more porous hair will find it naturally absorbs products more excessively. Therefore, leaving your toning shampoo on for too long could result in stained strands
Do you have an addiction to purple shampoo? Purple shampoo users often think more is better! This, however, is not the case; you can use purple shampoo too much! Overuse will lead to your hair looking slightly purple or ashy, leaving your blonde locks feeling dull and darker.
As we know, most blondes achieve their colour through a bleaching technique of some kind. Therefore, your hair may need a little extra nourishment or an additional brightening boost. If so, you could pair your purple shampoo with a purple conditioner, treatment, or mask. Some examples of these we highly recommend are Redken 5th Avenue NYC Colour Extend Blondage Range and the Hi Lift Zero Yellow Range.
Now you have the knowledge of purples shampoo, we would like to recommend our top 5 Professional Purple Tonging Shampoos.
